Bored of your usual coffee? Fed up with latte or cappuccino? Then why not try something a bit different? In order to make your own unusual speciality coffee drinks or to produce them in your catering establishment you will need a few extra ingredients. In addition to your espresso beans, sugars, milk and chocolate dustings that are used to make most standard coffee drinks you will need to purchase a supply of cherries, almonds, hazelnuts, whipped cream and ground cinnamon. These will probably suffice for most recipes and of course not all are required for every recipe. The main ingredients that you will need however are flavoured syrups. These special syrup flavourings are available from good coffee retailers or can be ordered over the internet easily enough. If you run your own establishment then your usual coffee supplier will probably stock these items and can deliver them with your usual coffee order. There are several makes of flavoured syrups available depending on which country you are from, but my particular favourite are the 1883 de Philibert Routin brand from France. The most common flavoured syrups are vanilla, chocolate, amaretto, cinnamon, caramel, Irish Cream and hazelnut, but more exotic and unusual flavours are available for more elaborate recipes. Why not start with a couple of flavours and build up a collection as you get to know and experience various recipes. There are many recipes freely available on the internet which you can try out as well as experimenting and perhaps designing your very own!To get you started here’s a couple you may want to try out.We assume you have you own espresso machine with steam wand and are familiar with steaming and foaming milk.MochanillaIngredients:16 ml chocolate syrup16 ml vanilla syrup1 shot of espresso6 oz (180 ml) cold milkWhipped creamCocoa powderMethod:Mix together the two syrups and the milk in a jug. Steam foam the mixture. Pour the espresso into a 12 oz (250 ml) glass, and add the steamed milk mixture. Add whipped cream to the top and garnish with a sprinkle of cocoa powder.Bistro de ParisIngredients:8 ml hazelnut syrupDouble shot of espresso coffeeWhipped creamShaved hazelnutMethod:Into a 6 oz (180 ml) add the hazelnut syrup. Add a double shot of espresso and stir. Top with whipped cream and garnish with shaved hazelnut.Try making these at home for a delicious change or offering them at your own catering establishment as an alternative - you may be surprised at how popular they will become.—More unusual coffee recipes can be found at www.cafebar.co.uk in our Coffee School Section Espresso Machine News

When it comes to popular world drinks, coffee is definitely on the top of the list. Because of our morning ritual involving coffee as well as coffee shops turning up everywhere, espresso machines have become in high demand! There are three things to keep in mind when purchasing an espresso machine. One, what it really takes to make a good cup of coffee, two, the time it takes to make, and three, what it takes to maintain the machine. It’s absolutely key you don’t forget these factors when looking into purchasing one for yourself. An espresso machine should be used with finely grounded coffee beans, and spring or aerated water. And many espresso machines have a filter built-in, to make the water taste a bit cleaner. There are a variety of espresso machines, and some have two dispensers. It’s considerably more expensive to have the dual model, and that also tends to be the model fitted with the water filter. One important thing people forget when purchasing an espresso machine is cleaning. Make sure you can easily and effortlessly clean your machine after each days use. If you decide to neglect cleaning, all the old bits will become stale over time and make your coffee taste horrible. So how does it work? It shoots 90 degree centrigrade water, and has it pressured into freshly ground coffee. The resulting oils are removed and used to create a syrupy liquid. In an ideal world, an espresso machine could turn out a double shot in around 20 seconds. Another element of a great espresso making is ensuring you are roasting very, very lightly. If the roasting isn’t done extremely carefully, the sugars and rich aroma will be lost. If you roast your espresso too dark, expect liquid charcoal, cause that’s what it’s going to taste like. What’s critical in a good espresso is using a great espresso blend. It’s a must that the coffees are specially blended to become smooth and rich. The blend should be freshly ground and brewed within 4 days from actually roasting. There’s a variety of espresso machines available, not just one. There are piston-driven ones, steam espresso machines, pump-driven ones, stovetop machines, automatic makers, as well as super automatic makers. You shouldn’t have to spend too much of your time and energy maintaining the machine, especially if you get one with a built in water tank, that way you can avoid plumbing costs and you can move the machine whenever you need.Chris Jensen is a contributing author of Jetfly Shop.
Starbucks coffee is one of the top names in the cafe industry, producing high-class beans, brewing accessories and building caffeine shops worldwide. However, Starbucks coffee started out the same as any other business ?with a few shops and enough products to sell. The history of Starbucks cafe began in Seattle around 1971 when three friends (Zev Siegl, Gordon Bowker and Jerry Baldwin) opened their small shop and began selling freshly roasted caffeine beans and brewing accessories. It branched out to six outlets throughout Washington around 1980, when Zev Siegl sold out in pursuit of other ventures. Howard Schultz and His Vision In 1982, a plastics salesman named Howard Schultz was hired as head of the marketing department of Starbucks coffee. During a trip in Italy around 1983, Schultz found himself obsessed with Italy’s cafe beans and industry, which started his idea of setting up a caffeine shop in the United States. Unfortunately, Baldwin wasn’t too excited about Schultz’s idea, but he did let him test the idea by implementing a small espresso bar in one of the Starbucks stores. Because of its immediate success, Schultz opened up his own store named II Giornale. It was only in 1987 that Shultz started a worldwide name for Starbucks coffee when Baldwin decided to sell the company for $3.8 million. Schultz convinced several investors of his vision ?120 Starbucks outlets for the next five years. He converted the six Starbucks shops into cafe houses and changed the name of II Giornale shops into Starbucks. In 1992, the Starbucks caffeine shops in operation totaled 165, exceeding Schultz’s original vision. Today, over 8,000 cafes in thirty countries are in operation with annual revenues of over $7.5 million. Starbucks Coffee Liqueur Starbucks cafe liqueur is the company’s adult-only version of their line of caffeines. Sold in 750 ml bottles, the main idea of the company is to sell the liquor, their coffee and the name Starbucks into one. The product itself comes from 100 per cent Starbucks cafe combined with 20 per cent alcohol. This line of liquor-caffeine product is a result of a joint venture with Jim Beam Brands, which is a major player in the wine industry. The reason for the marketing of this product was due to a Starbucks survey that revealed that over 50 per cent of their loyal clients consumed coffee liquors. Starbucks cafe has collaborated with other companies, such as Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream and Pepsi-Cola Company. With the company’s collaboration with Jim Bean, Starbucks caffeine reports that their DoubleShot remains the number one in the liquor-coffee category. With the production of high-class cafe beans, brewing accessories, caffeine makers and espresso machines as well as the collaboration of different top players in other industries, Starbucks coffee continues to produce well-known products that both loyal patrons and new caffeine drinkers love.John Hilaire is a webmaster for the Keurig Coffee Maker related website.Find Gevalia Coffee at www.financehm.com/ Espresso Machine News
